RT. HON. STEPHEN HARPER (Prime Minister of Canada): Thank you very much. Merci beaucoup. Bonjour à tous. Greetings, everyone, and thank you, Senator, for that very kind introduction. I think it’s common knowledge now, Raynell, that you will be leading our delegation to Ukraine. You will be putting to use all the skills you have developed as one of the few people ever in Canada to have served in all three branches of government: in the judiciary as a judge, in the executive as an ambassador, and now in the legislature as a senator. So let me take this opportunity to thank you personally for your willingness to undertake this assignment. I couldn’t be happier to see it in hands as capable or as committed as yours. Thank you. (APPLAUSE) Greetings also to my Parliamentary colleagues, to Minister Baird, to Minister Fantino, to Parliamentary Secretary Lois Brown, and to all Parliamentary colleagues from all parties who have joined us today. Thank you for being here and for lending your support to this vital enterprise. Ladies and gentlemen, before I go any further, I want to congratulate all of you...

James Bezan, Member of Parliament for Selkirk-Interlake, delivered the following statement in the House of Commons, strongly condemned NDP MP’s Peter Julian and Don Davies for hosting a Thanksgiving dinner for former KGB agent, Mikhail Lennikov, in East Vancouver. Bezan said: “Three years ago, the Federal Court of Canada and the Immigration and Refugee Board ruled that former KGB agent Mikhail Lennikov was inadmissible to Canada.” “Lennikov is now a fugitive evading deportation orders, and has illegally taken sanctuary in a church basement in Vancouver.” “Two weeks ago, the NDP MP`s from Burnaby-New Westminster and Vancouver-Kingsway had Thanksgiving dinner with the former KGB agent in a show of support.” “It must be said that anyone who was part of the former KGB assisted in one form or another with the atrocities carried out by the KGB.” “It doesn't matter how basic or advanced their role was, they all worked together to fulfill the KGB`s brutal mission. How many people were wrongfully arrested or killed by the KGB as a result of Lennikov`s services?” “These two NDP MPs have...

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress welcomes the unanimous adoption of a historic motion honouring Metropolitan Andrei Sheptytsky by the Parliament of Canada on Tuesday April 24, 2012. "This very important tribute by the Parliament of Canada to the deeds of Metropolitan Sheptytsky in saving the lives of many Jews in the Nazi Holocaust during World War II is a testament to the world of his righteousness," stated UCC National President Paul Grod. "The acts of Metropolitan Sheptytsky shine as a beacon for all of us to do the right thing in the face of difficult circumstances. We applaud this recognition and are grateful for the statement made by Ted Opitz, a Polish Canadian Member of Parliament, and to Minister Jason Kenney for proposing the motion as well as to all Members of Parliament for their principled and non-partisan unanimous approval."...

There is no question that the conference, “Ukraine at the Crossroads” and parliamentary hearings on the status of human rights in Ukraine – all of which took place in Ottawa from March 5th-8th – left an impression on those attending. The inclusion of world-renowned academics and historians, as well as the heartfelt cooperation of the Canadian government, showed that the world is deeply concerned about Ukraine’s well-being - a comforting thought for those who live in the Ukrainian diaspora, and long for their homeland’s economic and political freedom. Though many express this sentiment, it is perhaps the most refreshing to know that young people in the Ukrainian community stand ready not only to learn about the tribulations of their homeland, but to share the heavy burden of eradicating them...
