Move over boys, because the Winnipeg Sun has a woman at the helm.
Daria Zmiyiwsky has been named the Sun's new publisher.
This is the first time in the Sun's 34 years that a woman has taken on this role.
"When they offered me the position and said you'll be taking over Winnipeg and you'll be the first (female) publisher, I just went, 'Nellie McClung would be so proud of this moment,'" she said.
Channelling the woman who championed women's right to vote in Manitoba, Zmiyiwsky said she wants to bring new energy and ideas to the Winnipeg Sun.
"I believe all organizations need a blend of male and female people to make the organization," she said. "One leadership style is not better, it's not stronger; it's a blend."
She wants to rejuvenate the newspaper by engaging the community and increasing the Sun's work with charities.
Zmiyiwsky sees her position as the person who connects businesses, advertisers and the community.
"It's the face of the paper in essence. It's listening to the community and getting the message out," she said. "That's what I am really passionate about, to build partnerships with businesses to help them grow."
It's also a homecoming for Zmiyiwsky, who is from Winnipeg and worked for the Winnipeg Sun years ago before moving to Ontario and working for Sun Media in Niagara in community relations.
The move puts her in the same city as her son Andrew, her three sisters and her mother.
"For me it wasn't a hard decision, going home, going to a familiar paper and I'm really excited," she said.
