Andrij Makuch M.A., passed away suddenly on Friday, January 18, 2019, at the age of 62. Andrij was born to the late Rev. Ivan and Kateryna Makuch in Lethbridge, Alberta, and grew up there and in Victoria. In the late 1970s he graduated with an MA in history from the University of Alberta, where he was active and was president of the Ukrainian Canadian Student' Union. Before joining the editorial staff of the Encyclopedia of Ukraine at the Toronto Office of the CIUS in 1988, he resided in Edmonton and Saskatoon and worked as a researcher for the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, a sessional lecturer in the Department of Slavic Studies at the University of Saskatchewan, and a staff member of the Saskatchewan Provincial Council of the Ukrainian Canadian Committee. In addition to his many duties at the Toronto Office of the CIUS, a research unit affiliated with the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures of the University of Toronto, Andrij also served as president of the Ukrainian People's Home in Toronto and a member of the Board of Directors of Ukrainian Canadian Research and Documentation Centre.
For over thirty years Andrij contributed much to the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies (CIUS) and its research, editorial, and publishing activities as a manuscript editor of the Encyclopedia of Ukraine; senior editor of the Internet Encyclopedia of Ukraine; research coordinator of the Kule Ukrainian Canadian Studies Centre; and associate director, research and publications, of the Holodomor Research and Education Consortium. Andrij’s passing is a profound loss for the Ukrainian community.
He will be fondly remembered for his passion for knowledge, his love of music and film, his joy in recreational activities, especially cribbage, his culinary skills and his humour. Andrij will be remembered by his children Larisa, Tania, and John Zenon; his brothers Nestor and Stephen; their spouses, children, grandchildren, and cousins; and all of his friends and colleagues in Canada and Ukraine.
