The Former President of the Ukrainian World Congress Eugene Czolij became the Honorary Consul of Ukraine in Montreal, QC. The official Agreement outlining the mandate of the Honorary Consul was signed on Friday, October 16, 2020. This mandate will extend to the entire province of Quebec and has marked the first time in history that Ukraine receives its diplomatic presence in this province.
“This is an important geographical area and a unique person,” said Andriy Shevchenko, Ukraine's Ambassador to Canada. Shevchenko expressed that "Quebec already stands out as leader among all Canadian provinces in terms of trade with Ukraine. And we are infinitely pleased that Ukrainian interests in Quebec will be represented by Mr. Czolij, an iconic figure for the international Ukrainian community and a brilliant, authoritative lawyer.”
Eugene Cholij served as the President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (1998-2004) and the President of the Ukrainian World Congress (2008-2018). Since 2019, he has been the President of «Ukraine-2050», a non-governmental organization that works with stakeholders within Ukraine, the international community and the Ukrainian diaspora to help establish a shared vision of Ukraine’s future and implement, within one generation - namely by 2050, a strategy for the sustainable development of Ukraine as a fully independent, territorially integral, democratic, reformed and economically competitive European state. As a senior partner at Lavery de Billy, one of the largest law firms in Quebec, Cholij practices corporate and commercial litigation, as well as insolvency and financial restructuring law. Since 2012, Best Lawyers, one of the oldest and most respected publications in the legal profession, has recognized Eugene Cholij as a leading specialist in his field of practice.
“It is an honor and a duty for me to serve as an Honorary Consul, promoting Ukraine's interests in Canada and promoting trade, economic, cultural and scientific ties between the two countries,” said Mr. Czolij.
