The territory of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is occupied by Russian troops, they control the administrative buildings and the passage to the plant.
"The ZNPP administrative building and the checkpoint at the station are under the control of the occupiers,» said Energoatom NPP. "The station staff continues to work on power units, ensuring stable operation of nuclear facilities. The radiation background is normal. Unfortunately, there are dead and wounded among the Ukrainian defenders of the station."
"On March 4, 2022, the Zaporizhzhia NPP site was shelled by the military forces of the Russian Federation,» said the State Inspectorate for Nuclear Regulation of Ukraine. «As a result of which a fire broke out on the territory of ZNPP. The fire was extinguished by the SES of Ukraine."
«The site of the Zaporizhzhia NPP has been seized by the military forces of the Russian Federation,» they said. "Personnel work at their workplaces, operational personnel monitor the condition of power units and ensure their operation in accordance with the requirements of technical regulations for safe operation. Detours are also being carried out to identify any damage to the site. "
No changes in the radiation status after the fire in the ZNPP training building were recorded.
Currently, only one power unit is working - the fourth.
Condition of power units:
Power unit № 1: planned and preventive repairs.
Power units №№ 2, 3: disconnected from the grid and cooling of nuclear installations.
Power unit № 4: in operation, electric power 690 MW.
Power units № 5, 6: cooling of nuclear installations is carried out.
"Currently, the cooling of nuclear fuel at Zaporizhzhia NPP power units is provided by design systems of power units in accordance with the requirements of technical regulations for safe operation,» said Energoatom NPP. «The loss of the ability to cool nuclear fuel will lead to significant radioactive releases into the environment. As a result, such an event may exceed all previous accidents at nuclear power plants, including the Chernobyl accident and the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. "
The Inspectorate reminds that in addition to the six power units at the Zaporizhzhia NPP site, there is a storage facility for spent nuclear fuel, the damage caused by shelling will also lead to a radioactive release.
On the night of March 4, nuclear safety at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant was disrupted, reactors were in danger due to shelling by the Russian military and fire.
Firefighters were not allowed to put out the fire caused by the fighting, but later allowed - and at 06:20 the fire was extinguished.
President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the world community and said that no one had ever fired on nuclear power plants, the Russians were blackmailing with an explosion and the world was threatened by a global catastrophe.
In Enerhodar - 6 power units, while at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in 1986 one exploded. In total, there are 15 nuclear units in Ukraine.
