Based on one of the most overlooked tragedies of the 20th century, Bitter Harvest is a powerful story of love, honor, rebellion and survival as seen through the eyes of two young lovers caught in the ravages of Joseph Stalin’s genocidal policies against Ukraine in the 1930s. As Stalin advances the ambitions of communists in the Kremlin, a young artist named Yuri (Max Irons) battles to survive famine, imprisonment and torture to save his childhood sweetheart Natalka (Samantha Barks) from the “Holodomor,” the death-by-starvation program that ultimately killed millions of Ukrainians. In light of recent elections in the United States and the deteriorating security situation in Eastern Europe and other volatile regions of the world, the National Executive of the League of Ukrainian Canadians would like to outline our vision of key priorities in Canada – Ukraine relations in 2017 and beyond. The current unstable global climate requires principled and resolute leadership on behalf of the West and its allies. After the popular Maidan uprising in Kyiv three years ago, Russia seized and illegally annexed Crimea from Ukraine and launched a war in the Donbas, Ukraine's eastern region. In response, Canada, the US, and the EU sanctioned Russia and provided significant assistance to Ukraine. Therefore, now is the time for Canada and its allies to increase support to Ukraine given its progress in implementing important reforms and the continuous existential threat to Ukraine from Russia...

On Saturday, November 26, 2016 over 400 people attended a very moving Holodomor Commemorative Service organized by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Toronto Branch. The Commemorative event was held to honour and pray for the millions of lives that perished by a deliberate starvation led by the Soviet regime during 1932-1933. Present were two Holodomor survivors, Mr. Stefan Horlatsch and Mr. Mykola Latyshko along with their families. As well in attendance were children and grandchildren of deceased Holodomor survivors...

On November 29, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, in partnership with the Canada-Ukraine Parliamentary Friendship Group and the Embassy of Ukraine in Canada, held a solemn commemoration in Canada's Parliament to mark the 83rd anniversary of the Holodomor Famine-Genocide in Ukraine. In 1932-33 the totalitarian regime of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin sentenced the Ukrainian nation to death by starvation. Millions of children, women and men were condemned to death because of the Ukrainian peoples' aspiration for independence, their desire to speak their language and maintain their culture and traditions. The XXV Triennial Congress of Ukrainian Canadians, held in Regina September 29-October 2, 2016, adopted a series of resolutions that will guide the work of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) for the next three years. Over 250 delegates from Ukrainian Canadian organizations and communities across Canada participated in the work of the historic Triennial Congress. "These resolutions set out an ambitious agenda and plan for the next three years. We have left the Congress energized by the vibrant discussion," stated Paul Grod, National President of the UCC. "As the UCC continues its role as the voice of the 1.3-million-strong Ukrainian community in Canada, we call on all our member organizations, provincial councils and local branches to work towards achieving these important goals."
